Japanese plantation workers brought shave ice to Hawaii in the 1920's. They made it by shaving ice from from blocks with machetes and poured fruit juice over it. After leaving the plantations and opening their own businesses, often family-owned grocery stores, shave ice went commercial. At Blue Hawaii Shave Ice, we honor these beginnings by using only the finest syrups made in Hawaii and even had our shaver shipped from Honolulu.
